Gary Lineker Urges Arsenal’s Gyokeres to Improve Scoring Form

Arsenal’s ambitions for the current Premier League season hinge on the performance of their striker, Viktor Gyokeres. According to pundit Gary Lineker, the Swedish forward needs to improve his goalscoring record soon. With the team currently leading the league table after eight matches, expectations remain high following their significant investment of £63.2 million in Gyokeres during the summer transfer window.
Despite Arsenal sitting at the top with 19 points, Gyokeres has only managed to find the net three times this season. His last goal came over a month ago, on September 13, and Lineker expressed concern that the 27-year-old’s current form could hinder the club’s quest for silverware this year.
On the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker emphasized the need for Gyokeres to step up. He noted that while Arsenal has scored 15 goals in the league, a significant portion—ten goals—have resulted from set-piece situations.
Arsenal’s recent victory against Fulham on October 18, 2023, showcased their strength in set pieces. The only goal of the match came from a corner taken by Bukayo Saka, which was flicked on by Gabriel Magalhaes to Leandro Trossard, who successfully converted. This victory not only solidified Arsenal’s position at the top but also highlighted the effectiveness of their set-piece strategy.
Fulham manager Marco Silva praised Gabriel for his impact in the air, citing his defensive prowess and contributions in set-piece situations. Silva commented on the difficulty of managing Gabriel, stating, “He has been incredible in terms of attacking set-pieces for Arsenal in recent years.” Gabriel has amassed 21 goals and six assists for Arsenal, with a considerable number of these contributions arising from set plays.
As Arsenal pushes for a successful season, the focus will be on Gyokeres to find his scoring touch. The club’s title challenge may very well depend on his ability to deliver on the expectations that accompanied his high-profile transfer. With the season still young, there is time for the striker to regain his form and contribute significantly to the Gunners’ ambitions.
The spotlight remains on both Gyokeres and his teammates as they navigate the competitive landscape of the Premier League, striving to secure their place at the pinnacle of English football.
