Minister Durgesh Unveils Pension Scheme for Artists in Andhra Pradesh

In a significant move for the arts community, Andhra Pradesh’s Tourism, Culture, and Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh announced the introduction of a special pension scheme for artists. This initiative aims to provide financial support and revive the cultural landscape of the state. The minister made these remarks during the inauguration of the G.M.R. Varalakshmi Kalakshetra in Rajam, located in the Vizianagaram district, on Sunday.
Durgesh expressed a commitment to enhancing the dignity of artists, highlighting the previous government’s failure to address their needs adequately. He criticized the former administration for merging artist pensions with general pensions, which he argued diminished the respect due to artists. “Money is not important to artists, but they deserve self-respect through pensions given in their name,” he stated, reiterating sentiments previously expressed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
Plans for Database and Support Initiatives
During the event, Durgesh outlined plans for a comprehensive database aimed at providing essential facilities to artists. He emphasized the importance of this databank, stating, “Such a databank will help provide facilities and support to artists.” The minister urged drama societies to register with the government to facilitate the creation of this database, which will be instrumental in identifying and supporting artists across the state.
Moreover, Durgesh announced that he would collaborate with Rajam MLA Kondru Murali and Nataka Academy chairman Gummadi Gopalakrishna to develop actionable initiatives that would further enhance the art sector in Andhra Pradesh.
In a notable development, Durgesh revealed that Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat had agreed in principle to establish a campus of the National School of Drama (NSD) in Andhra Pradesh. “The National School of Drama will come to AP very soon,” he asserted, underscoring the institution’s legacy of nurturing renowned talents, including celebrated actor Naseeruddin Shah.
A Commitment to Cultural Revitalization
The coalition government’s approach marks a turnaround from previous policies, with a clear focus on preserving artistic heritage and promoting cultural growth. Durgesh’s announcements signal a proactive stance towards revitalizing the arts and ensuring that artists receive the recognition and support they deserve.
As preparations for the new pension scheme and the establishment of the NSD campus progress, the cultural community in Andhra Pradesh is poised for a promising transformation. The minister’s commitment underscores the government’s recognition of the arts as a vital component of the state’s identity and economic landscape.
