Tottenham Secures Xavi Simons in £51.8 Million Transfer

Tottenham Hotspur has officially signed Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig for a reported fee of £51.8 million. The announcement was made on Friday as the Premier League club seeks to bolster its roster under the guidance of new manager Thomas Frank. Simons, 22, has signed a long-term contract, marking a significant step in Tottenham’s effort to enhance their competitive edge.

Simons expressed his enthusiasm for joining Tottenham, stating, “I’m really happy and can’t wait to get going. I’ve been dreaming of this for a long time. The young midfielder has a commendable track record, having begun his career at FC Barcelona’s prestigious La Masia academy, which has also produced football legends like Lionel Messi. Simons joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) as a teenager in 2019, where he honed his skills further. His recent loan to PSV Eindhoven during the 2022/23 season was particularly noteworthy, as he netted 22 goals across various competitions.

Following a successful stint in the Netherlands, Simons transferred to RB Leipzig, where he continued to impress, accumulating another 22 goals in 78 appearances. His move to Tottenham represents a new chapter in his career, and he is expected to be introduced to Spurs fans before the club’s home league game against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Frank highlighted Simons’ potential impact on the squad, noting his proficiency in both scoring and assisting goals. “Xavi has proven his ability to get goals and assists, both from the number 10 position and left-wing. He also has a great eye for his teammates in terms of unlocking defences,” Frank stated. “I know he will come in and be part of a good team that is already working hard together.”

As part of his new role at Tottenham, Simons will wear the number seven shirt, previously held by former captain Heung-min Son.
