Panthers Re-Sign Hunter Renfrow After Jalen Coker’s Injury

The Carolina Panthers have re-signed wide receiver Hunter Renfrow just days after parting ways with him, according to a source familiar with the situation. The new one-year contract comes as the team navigates injury challenges, notably the placement of Jalen Coker on injured reserve due to a quadriceps injury sustained during practice on March 14, 2024.
Coker is expected to be sidelined for the first four to six games of the upcoming season. His role was initially set to be a replacement for veteran receiver Adam Thielen, who was traded to the Minnesota Vikings on March 12, 2024. Renfrow’s return not only fills Coker’s vacated roster spot but also represents a significant opportunity for the 2021 Pro Bowl selection, who has faced health challenges over the past two seasons.
Renfrow missed the entire 2024 season after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders following a disappointing 2023 campaign. He struggled with ulcerative colitis, which severely impacted his performance and overall health. During this difficult time, Renfrow experienced severe symptoms, including prolonged fevers that left him questioning his future in professional football.
Reflecting on his struggles, Renfrow stated, “I felt so bad those two years, and I felt like I let my teammates down so much. I had expectations. I just signed a new contract [in 2022]. I had a new coaching staff that I was going to be perfect for. And I was just a dud.” His determination to return to form was evident as he trained throughout the spring with the Panthers.
The Panthers maintained communication with Renfrow after his release, expressing interest in bringing him back. Initially, the team aimed to sign him to the practice squad as he worked to recover from a hamstring injury that had hampered his progress during training camp. Coach Dave Canales noted that Renfrow had not fully regained his form at the time of his release, but both he and general manager Dan Morgan emphasized their desire for him to remain part of the organization.
Coker’s injury expedited the process of Renfrow’s return, allowing him to step back into a more prominent role on the team. Brad Idzik, the Panthers’ offensive coordinator, praised Coker’s agility and speed, noting, “He’s got some freaky lateral quickness… which simulates, ‘I’m going full-tilt vertical.'” With Coker out, Renfrow’s experience and skills will be crucial for the Panthers as they prepare for the upcoming season.
As the Panthers look to solidify their receiving corps, Renfrow’s comeback story adds another layer of narrative to the team’s dynamics, highlighting resilience and the impact of injuries in professional sports.
