Harmanpreet Kaur Leads India in Thrilling Final Against South Africa

After a two-hour rain delay, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur stepped onto the pitch at the D.Y. Patil Stadium to assess conditions for the final match against South Africa on March 10, 2024. The match marked a significant moment in the tournament, with India aiming to secure the championship title.
India lost the toss and was put in to bat first, a situation that posed challenges due to damp conditions. Kaur acknowledged the necessity of scoring runs but emphasized the importance of maintaining composure under pressure. “We knew we might have to bat first. We knew it would be tough conditions, but credit to Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. They handled the first 10 overs well,” Kaur stated.
The team’s strategy revolved around staying focused on their game rather than fixating on a specific target. “Our aim was simple – we knew that if we thought of a big target, we would come under pressure. The main thing was to keep batting and playing our game. We tried to put 300 runs on the board; we were one run short,” Kaur explained after the match.
India displayed resilience throughout the game, with Kaur noting the team’s positive attitude. “We came onto the field as a strong unit. Whenever needed, we got a breakthrough. It was a very good match,” she added. This spirit was evident as the players rallied together, showcasing their skills amid challenging circumstances.
The change of venue to the D.Y. Patil Stadium was met with enthusiasm from the squad. Kaur highlighted the significance of the supportive crowd, stating, “As soon as we got to know that the final venue changed to D.Y. Patil Stadium, we all got so happy because we’ve always played good cricket there. The biggest thing is the crowd — it’s always so supportive.”
As the match unfolded, India’s innings reflected both determination and skill. Kaur’s leadership was instrumental in guiding the team through the complexities of the final, setting the stage for a thrilling encounter that would be remembered by fans and players alike. With an impressive performance, India aimed to cement its legacy in the tournament and inspire future generations of cricketers.
