Byju Raveendran Reflects on Cricket Lessons from Brian Lara

On Teachers’ Day 2025, Byju Raveendran, the founder of the Indian edtech company Byju’s, shared insights on the profound impact of unconventional teachers. In a reflective LinkedIn post, he emphasized that life’s most valuable lessons often come from experiences outside traditional classrooms, highlighting how cricket shaped his understanding of perseverance and discipline.
Cricket as a Learning Platform
Raveendran described his childhood in rural Kerala, where cricket served as his first classroom. He wrote, “Not all teachers stand in classrooms. Some teach us with a bat in hand.” His admiration for cricket began at a young age, inspired particularly by the legendary player Brian Charles Lara. Raveendran recalled that his first email address, [email protected], was a testament to the influence Lara had on his life.
Life Lessons from a Cricketing Legend
Raveendran identified five significant lessons learned from Lara’s cricketing career that extend beyond the field:
1. Practice Makes Possible: Lara’s distinctive batting style, characterized by a high backlift, initially appeared risky to some. Yet, he set remarkable records, including scores of 375, 400 not out, and 501 runs. Raveendran learned that with dedication and consistent practice, any skill can be mastered.
2. Patience and Planning are True Strengths: Lara demonstrated that success is not solely dependent on talent. He emphasized the importance of patience, strategic planning, and adaptability, showcasing that thoughtful execution leads to victory.
3. Learning from Records: Never Give Up: In 1994, Lara set a world record by scoring 375 runs against England. Nearly ten years later, that record was broken by Matthew Hayden. Remarkably, just six months later, Lara reclaimed his record with a score of 400 runs on the same ground. This taught Raveendran the value of resilience and determination.
4. Learning from Mistakes: Lara faced challenges throughout his career, including dips in form and leadership struggles. Raveendran noted that true greatness lies in the ability to learn from setbacks and emerge stronger.
5. Making Studies and Sports Beautiful: Lara transformed cricket into an art form. His approach to batting inspired Raveendran to see education as something that should be enriching and enjoyable rather than intimidating.
As Raveendran reflects on these lessons, he underscores the idea that a true teacher, whether in a school or on a cricket field, empowers individuals to view the world through a new lens. On this Teachers’ Day, he expressed gratitude to those who inspire others to persevere through challenges and pursue their dreams.
In celebrating Teachers’ Day 2025, Raveendran reminds us that life’s greatest educators can take many forms, and their influence can shape our paths in unexpected ways.
