A multidisciplinary scientific team has successfully completed an extensive field mission in North Sikkim, focusing on glacial lake assessments and sediment studies. This initiative took place from August 26 to September 1, following recent flood-related incidents in the region.

The expedition commenced in Muguthang, with the team reaching South Lhonak by Day 8 of their mission. At an elevation of 17,200 feet, the team conducted crucial bathymetric studies. They installed pressure probes and collected post-flood sediment samples, which are vital for ongoing assessments of glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) risks. To invoke blessings for a safe and successful operation, ceremonial poojas were held at Chimigyader and the lake.

Upon fulfilling their objectives at South Lhonak, personnel from various institutions, including the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Central Water Commission (CWC), Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE), and Geological Survey of India (GSI), departed the site. Remaining team members advanced to Changsang Lake, situated at 18,100 feet. Here, they executed additional bathymetric mapping and conducted a detailed morphometric analysis of the lake’s terminal moraine. This analysis is essential for evaluating the stability and potential hazards of glacial lakes.

On September 1, the team arrived in Thangu, where they began preparations to study Yuleh Khangse Lake, located above Lashar Valley. This research is part of a broader glaciological and hydrological mission aimed at monitoring Himalayan glacial systems.

The expedition plays a critical role in India’s efforts to enhance early warning mechanisms against GLOFs and other climate-induced hazards in high-altitude regions. As climate change poses increasing risks to these vulnerable ecosystems, the data gathered during this mission will inform future strategies for risk management and environmental protection in the Himalayas.
