In a significant advancement for India’s defence capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has transferred three advanced materials technologies to industry partners, marking a crucial step towards self-reliance in defence production. The transfer took place on August 30, 2025, during a ceremony at the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) in Hyderabad. The event was attended by Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman of DRDO.

The technologies include the manufacturing of high-strength radomes, which will be produced by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL)DMR-1700 steel sheets and plates, which will be supplied to Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL)Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) at its Bhilai Steel Plant. This robust material is designed to meet stringent defence specifications, ensuring reliability in naval vessel construction.

Dr. Kamat praised the research and development efforts that led to these innovations, highlighting the importance of collaboration between industry and research institutions. He noted that these technology transfers demonstrate DMRL’s multidisciplinary expertise and commitment to advancing critical strategic materials.

In addition to the technology transfers, the event also featured the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DMRL and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. This agreement allows DMRL to provide its technical expertise, facilities, and capabilities to support the activities of AAIB.

Several senior officials were present at the ceremony, including Dr. R.V. Hara Prasad, Director General of Naval Systems and Materials, Dr. Manu Korulla, Director General of Resource and Management, and Dr. R. Balamuralikrishnan, Director of DMRL.

The successful transfer of these technologies is expected to significantly accelerate the indigenous production of critical materials for defence and strategic applications. This initiative aligns with the government’s ongoing push for Aatmanirbharta, or self-reliance, in the defence sector, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and enhance national security.
