Andhra Pradesh Government to Launch IBM Quantum Computer in Amaravati

The government of Andhra Pradesh has announced plans to install an IBM Quantum Computer at the newly established Amaravati Quantum Computing Centre. This initiative aims to establish a ‘Quantum Valley’ in Amaravati, positioning the region as a global hub for knowledge, innovation, and technology. The announcement was made by Bhaskar Katamneni, Secretary to IT and Electronics, through a government order issued on July 20, 2023.
The ambitious project has already seen significant progress, with a detailed project report submitted to the Capital Region Development Authority. Subsequently, the authority allocated 50 acres of land for the Quantum Valley. To facilitate this vision, the Amaravati Quantum Computing Centre (AQCC) has been established as a specialized government entity.
In its first meeting, the AQCC decided to issue an Expression of Interest (EoI) to attract companies interested in setting up a quantum computer centre within the Quantum Valley. The goal is to create an ecosystem that benefits universities, research institutions, startups, and industries across various sectors.
In response to the EoI, IBM has offered to install a 133-qubit quantum computer in Amaravati at no capital cost to the government. This offer is contingent upon the provision of a facility measuring approximately 2,000 sqft, equipped with uninterrupted power supply, advanced cooling systems, and secure networking capabilities. Additionally, IBM proposed subsidized rental rates at Rs 10 per square foot and committed to providing 250 hours of free computing time annually for academic and government institutions in Andhra Pradesh over the next four years.
The AQCC board has accepted IBM’s proposals, establishing rental charges at Rs 30 per square foot, in line with government norms. Furthermore, a provision for 365 hours of free computing time annually for educational and governmental institutions in the state has been included. The costs associated with power and cooling will be covered by the state government.
The matter was presented to the state Quantum Mission, chaired by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, on August 20, 2023. After thorough discussions, the board’s recommendations were officially endorsed, marking a significant step towards realizing the vision for a Quantum Valley in Amaravati.
This initiative not only highlights the commitment of the Andhra Pradesh government to advance technological capabilities but also positions the state as a key player in the rapidly evolving field of quantum computing. The establishment of the AQCC represents a strategic investment in future innovation, potentially attracting global interest and expertise to the region.
