Chief Minister Revanth Reddy Demands Action on Building Approval Delays

Hyderabad’s Chief Minister, A. Revanth Reddy, expressed significant frustration on October 23, 2023, regarding persistent delays in approvals for construction projects under the “Build Now” initiative. During a review meeting at the Secretariat with officials from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), Reddy underscored that these delays are hindering progress for builders and communities.

He stressed the importance of timely approvals for multi-storied buildings and gated communities, asserting that the process should not serve as a means of harassment. Reddy noted that certain officials appeared to be negligent in processing applications, leading to unnecessary hardships for applicants. He directed HMDA secretary K. Ilambarithi to identify and address the inefficiencies within the department.

The Chief Minister highlighted that there has been a noticeable increase in complaints, particularly directed at officials from the Irrigation Department. He emphasized that the government will not tolerate any form of misconduct and expects transparency in the approval process to mitigate future disputes.

To facilitate a more efficient approval process, Reddy ordered an immediate LiDAR survey of lakes, nalas, and other water bodies within HMDA’s jurisdiction. He believes that comprehensive data will eliminate ambiguities concerning encroachments and clearances.

In a bid to streamline operations, Reddy instructed Ilambarithi to arrange regular meetings with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the Hyderabad Road Development Authority (HYDRAA), and irrigation department officials. He emphasized the necessity of periodic reviews of decision-making to ensure that permissions are granted swiftly, thereby promoting development activities in the city.

Reddy reiterated that project approvals must be based on merit, free from artificial obstacles. He urged officials to act responsibly to avoid corruption or unwarranted delays, stating, “Every application should be disposed of within a fixed timeframe.”

The review meeting was attended by several senior officials, including HMDA commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmed, GHMC commissioner R.V. Karnan, and HYDRAA commissioner A.V. Ranganath, all of whom are expected to support the Chief Minister’s call for immediate action.

Reddy’s clarion call for a more transparent and efficient process reflects the government’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for construction and urban development in Hyderabad. The Chief Minister’s directives aim to revitalize the approval system, ensuring that it serves the needs of the community effectively.
