Harvard Economist Warns Trump’s Tariffs on India Risk Relations

US President Donald Trump has drawn criticism from renowned economist Kenneth Rogoff regarding his decision to impose a 50% tariff on imports from India. Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Rogoff characterized the tariff strategy as a “risky gambit,” suggesting that it could adversely affect diplomatic relations with one of America’s key partners.
Rogoff articulated concerns that penalizing India will not contribute to resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Instead, he posited that such actions might inadvertently push New Delhi closer to China, which could emerge as a significant beneficiary in the short term. Rogoff’s insights highlight the complex interplay of international trade and geo-political alliances.
The economist emphasized that tariff policies tend to inflict the greatest damage on the country imposing them. He criticized Trump’s recent comments targeting the Federal Reserve, describing them as “just a disaster.” This critique underscores the broader implications of Trump’s economic policies, which Rogoff argues could destabilize the US economy while straining international relations.
As global trade dynamics continue to evolve, the implications of Trump’s tariff strategy are significant. With India being a crucial ally in the region, any deterioration in relations could have ripple effects, particularly in the context of the US-China rivalry.
Rogoff’s warnings serve as a reminder of the delicate balance required in international trade policies. The potential for increased tensions not only threatens bilateral ties but also complicates efforts to achieve broader geopolitical stability.
