India Moves Forward with Commonwealth Games Bid for 2030

India has officially submitted a proposal to host the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in 2030, marking a significant step towards bringing the prestigious event back to the country after two decades. On August 29, 2023, a delegation led by Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi delivered the bid in London to the Commonwealth Sports Association. This proposal aims to secure the centennial edition of the Games, which will celebrate 100 years since the inaugural event, originally held in 1930.
During the submission, Sanghavi emphasized the importance of this edition for both India and the Commonwealth. The event represents not only a celebration of sporting excellence but also the values of unity and shared heritage within the Commonwealth community. He stated that the 2030 Commonwealth Games would embody the ancient principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, which translates to “the world is one family,” promoting a sense of global connection and friendship.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), represented by its chief PT Usha, expressed that this bid reflects the aspirations of the nation. Usha noted, “The Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad will showcase not just India’s sporting capabilities but also the values of friendship, respect, and inclusivity that define our sporting culture.”
Hosting the Commonwealth Games would represent a significant achievement for India, as it would be the second time the country has held the event, following the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. India has previously hosted major multi-sport events, including the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The centennial Commonwealth Games in 2030 are poised to be a landmark occasion, highlighting India’s growth in the international sporting arena.
The proposal comes at a time when India is also pursuing the opportunity to host the 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad. Plans for the Games will be centered around the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, with additional infrastructure, such as the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, being developed around the venue.
As the bid progresses, the focus remains on showcasing India’s ability to host world-class sporting events and promoting values that resonate on a global scale. The decision on the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games is anticipated to be revealed in the coming months, with India’s proposal positioned as a strong contender.
