New US Visa Policy Triggers 6,000 F-1 Cancellations, Jaishankar Reports
The recent implementation of a new U.S. visa policy has resulted in the cancellation of approximately 6,000 F-1 student visas, according to Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar detailed how the policy, introduced in April 2025, has impacted students seeking education in the United States.
Jaishankar’s comments came amid rising concerns over the implications of these visa cancellations for Indian students. The F-1 visa, which allows international students to study in the U.S., is crucial for many Indian nationals pursuing higher education abroad. The minister emphasized the need for a thorough understanding of the policy changes and their effects on students.
In response to questions regarding the situation in Kerala, where complaints about illegal recruitment agencies have surfaced, Jaishankar assured the House that he would investigate the matter further. He pledged to provide updates to the members of the Rajya Sabha as more information becomes available.
The new policy has raised alarms among educational institutions and prospective students alike. Universities in the United States are increasingly reliant on international students, who contribute significantly to the academic environment and the economy. The U.S. Department of State has yet to clarify the specific reasons behind the policy changes, leaving many students and their families grappling with uncertainty.
Jaishankar’s remarks underscore the broader implications of visa policies on education and international relations. As countries navigate the complexities of student mobility, India’s government remains committed to supporting its citizens in their educational pursuits.
The issue of illegal recruitment agencies, particularly in Kerala, has added another layer of complexity. Many students have fallen victim to fraudulent practices, leading to significant financial losses and distress. Jaishankar’s commitment to addressing these concerns reflects a growing recognition of the need for regulatory oversight in the recruitment sector.
As the situation develops, students and educational institutions will be closely monitoring any changes in U.S. immigration policies. The impact of these visa cancellations could shape future enrollment trends and international student dynamics in both the United States and India.
