Mumbai Sees Slow Start with Only 100 Electric Bike Taxis Registered

Mumbai has seen only 100 electric bike taxis registered in the past two months, following the provisional licences granted by the State Transport Authority (STA) to three major aggregators. According to official data, this limited registration includes 50 electric bike taxis each from Rapido and Uber, both of which are BGauss electric scooters. These vehicles represent the only two-wheelers formally registered as bike taxis in the city thus far.

The provisional licences were issued under the Mumbai Bike Taxi Rules 2025, allowing companies to operate bike taxis across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The STA’s decision to permit these bike taxis reflects a move towards modernizing transport options in the bustling city. As mandated, the registered bike taxis are painted yellow and feature a cushion partition of approximately one foot in height between the rider and the passenger.

Current Fare Structure and Compliance Requirements

These electric bike taxis fall under the transport category and are identified by their yellow number plates with black letters. The STA has set a minimum fare of Rs 15 for the first 1.5 km and Rs 10.27 per kilometer thereafter. This fare structure is based on the Khatua Committee formula, which has been traditionally applied to taxis and autorickshaws in the region. A review of this fare structure is scheduled for one year from implementation.

Despite the limited number of registered bike taxis, it is important to note that a significant number of two-wheelers are currently being utilized for deliveries across the city. The STA has emphasized that these electric bike taxis are the only two-wheelers formally registered in the transport category this year.

In addition to Rapido and Uber, the STA has also granted provisional licences to the parent company of Ola, ANI Technologies Pvt Ltd. The STA requires these companies to apply for permanent licences within a month, ensuring compliance with the Maharashtra Bike Taxi Rules 2025.

The slow start in registering electric bike taxis highlights the challenges faced by new transport initiatives in Mumbai. As the city continues to grow, the demand for efficient and eco-friendly transportation options remains high. With the implementation of these regulations, stakeholders hope to see an increase in the adoption of electric bike taxis, contributing to a greener future for Mumbai’s urban transport landscape.
