India has officially launched its new e-passport system as part of the Passport Seva Programme V2.0. This initiative introduces chip-enabled booklets for all new applications and renewals, both within the country and at its diplomatic missions abroad. The rollout aims to enhance digital security and streamline immigration procedures, offering a significant upgrade for Indian travellers.

What Changes for Current Passport Holders?

Existing passports will remain valid until their designated expiry date. Travellers do not need to replace their current documents unless they are damaged, run out of pages, or are due for renewal. For those applying for a passport now, the transition to the new system means that every new or renewed passport will automatically be issued as an e-passport, regardless of whether the application occurs in India or overseas.

The implementation of the e-passport system is part of a broader strategy under the Global Passport Seva Programme. This ensures that all newly issued or renewed passports are embedded with an RFID chip, which stores personal and biometric information. The use of Public Key Infrastructure for digital signatures aligns the new e-passports with international electronic verification standards, significantly reducing the risk of identity fraud.

Enhanced User Experience and Security Features

The overhaul of the passport system also includes a redesigned website and mobile application. These platforms feature auto-filled forms, simplifying the application process. Applicants can upload documents more easily, and payment options have been expanded to include UPI and QR-code payments. Additionally, the introduction of AI chat and voice bots provides real-time support, making the overall experience more user-friendly.

The appearance of the e-passport closely resembles the traditional booklet, with a small gold emblem on the cover. The embedded RFID chip and antenna facilitate quick reading of the passport information, which enhances the efficiency of immigration checks.

The launch of the e-passport system represents a significant step for India towards modernizing its travel documentation and improving the security and efficiency of its immigration processes. As the country continues to embrace digital technologies, travellers can look forward to a smoother experience when navigating international borders.
