French President Emmanuel Macron was greeted like a rockstar by enthusiastic students during his visit to Sichuan University in Chengdu on December 5, 2023. Surrounded by a heavy security presence, Macron navigated through crowds of young fans who lined up for hours to see him. The excitement was palpable as students and local residents gathered outside a university sports hall, eager to catch a glimpse of the French leader.

“He is charming, and I feel very happy and honoured that he has come to Chengdu and our Sichuan University,” said Ye Maoxuan, a 21-year-old student studying material sciences. The atmosphere intensified as students captured the moment on their cellphones, sharing the excitement on social media. Earlier in the day, Macron had sparked interest by jogging in a local park, showcasing his energy and health.

As Macron arrived at approximately 15:00, students surged forward in a jubilant rush, hoping to shake his hand. This reception mirrored the enthusiasm he received during his visit to a university in Guangzhou earlier in 2023. His arrival in Chengdu followed discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where they addressed bilateral relations and Macron sought to bolster Chinese support for a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Strengthening Ties Through Education and Cultural Exchange

Students expressed hope that Macron’s visit would foster stronger academic partnerships between France and China. “I believe we should implement cooperative projects between our universities and France,” Ye remarked while waiting for security checks. He highlighted the unique advantages both countries possess in various fields, suggesting that collaboration could yield mutual benefits.

During Macron’s campus visit, his wife, Brigitte Macron, toured the Giant Panda Research Base in Chengdu. The couple’s trip included the signing of an agreement that will see two pandas transferred from China to France by 2027, replacing pandas that were recently returned to Chengdu from a French zoo. “Sending the pandas to France showcases the friendly interactions between the Chinese and French peoples,” said Gu Xingyu, a clinical medicine student, prior to Macron’s arrival. “We really hope this can enhance the friendship between our two countries.”

A Symbolic Visit with Lasting Impact

The engagement between Macron and the students signifies a broader cultural exchange, reflecting both nations’ commitment to strengthening their relationship. This visit not only highlights the importance of academic collaboration but also serves as a reminder of the robust ties that can be forged through shared interests and cultural diplomacy.

Macron’s enthusiastic reception in Chengdu stands as a testament to the potential for positive interactions between France and China, with the hopes of both nations resting on the future of their diplomatic and educational partnerships.
