Uttar Pradesh Launches ‘One District, One Cuisine’ Initiative
The government of Uttar Pradesh has announced the launch of the ‘One District, One Cuisine’ (ODOC) initiative, aimed at promoting the state’s rich culinary traditions on a global scale. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath revealed this plan on March 15, 2024, during a high-level meeting, emphasizing that each district will develop a unique identity based on its signature dish.
The ODOC initiative follows the success of the ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) scheme, which has become a cornerstone of Uttar Pradesh’s economic development. Adityanath stated that local food traditions, ranging from the halwa of one region to the dalmoth of another, encapsulate the cultural essence of the state. He underscored the need for improvements in quality, hygiene, packaging, branding, and marketing to transform these local cuisines into strong, marketable brands.
As part of the broader vision to elevate Uttar Pradesh’s culinary offerings, Adityanath noted that ODOC will work in tandem with ODOP to provide a significant boost “from local to global.” The Chief Minister highlighted that ODOP is evolving into its next phase, termed ODOP 2.0, which aims to enhance local industry, self-employment, and export capabilities.
Since its inception in 2018, the ODOP scheme has played a critical role in the state’s export ecosystem. Officials reported that over 1.25 lakh toolkits have been distributed, loans exceeding Rs 6,000 crore have been sanctioned, and more than 8,000 entrepreneurs have received direct marketing support. Additionally, 30 Common Facility Centres (CFCs) have been established, and 44 ODOP products have been geo-tagged, making them more accessible on major e-commerce platforms. Collectively, these products contribute over 50 percent of Uttar Pradesh’s total exports and have garnered national awards for two consecutive years.
Adityanath described ODOP 2.0 as a “powerful tool” for fostering sustainable employment, local enterprise, and export growth. He emphasized the importance of scaling up operations for those entrepreneurs who excelled during the initial phase. To strengthen the market presence of Uttar Pradesh’s products, he called for a focus on four key areas: technology, packaging, quality, and market access.
In a bid to enhance the effectiveness of CFCs, the Chief Minister directed that experts be engaged to provide small entrepreneurs with comprehensive support, including technical consultation, design, packaging, and production services. He also instructed that ODOP products be integrated into major retail networks and modern markets, rather than being limited to traditional sales channels.
Plans have been announced to establish dedicated ODOP centres within Unity Malls across various states. Communication with leading retail chains will be initiated to ensure that products from Uttar Pradesh are prominently displayed, further enhancing their visibility and marketability.
With the launch of the ODOC initiative, the Uttar Pradesh government aims to elevate its culinary heritage while fostering economic growth and enhancing the livelihoods of local producers.
