Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Delhi to engage in high-level discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the deepening of bilateral ties, especially in the realms of defence and technology. During a briefing held by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on December 5, 2025, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted the strong collaborative framework that exists between India and Russia.

The discussions between Modi and Putin reaffirmed the commitment to military cooperation as well as the transfer of technology, which has been a cornerstone of their partnership. Misri noted that Russia’s support for India’s Make in India initiative was a focal point of their conversations, with a significant emphasis on joint production capabilities.

“The Prime Minister appreciated President Putin’s support in expediting the opening of two new Indian consulates in Kazan and Yekaterinburg,” Misri stated. He added that these consulates would enhance India’s regional outreach in Russia and bolster trade, academic exchanges, cultural collaboration, and people-to-people ties.

In addition to defence matters, the leaders addressed the need for reforming the United Nations Security Council to better reflect current global realities. Misri underscored the importance of India and Russia collaborating in various international forums, where both nations are members.

The talks reflect the ongoing commitment from both sides to strengthen their partnership amid shifting geopolitical landscapes. With defence cooperation at the forefront, the discussions may pave the way for expanded military ties and technological advancements between the two nations.

The relationship between India and Russia has historically been robust, marked by extensive collaboration in various sectors. As both nations continue to navigate complex global dynamics, the emphasis on strengthening bilateral ties remains pivotal in their strategic agendas.
