PM Modi Condemns Bondi Beach Terror Attack; Death Toll Rises to 11
On December 14, 2025, a terrorist attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people. The incident occurred during a Jewish event known as Chanukah by the Sea, which was celebrating the first day of the Hanukkah festival. According to local authorities, two gunmen opened fire on the attendees, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and solidarity with the Australian people following this tragic event. He stated, “I strongly condemn the ghastly terrorist attack carried out today at Bondi Beach, Australia, targeting people celebrating the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.” Modi emphasized India’s commitment to fighting terrorism in all its forms, stating that the nation has a “zero tolerance” policy toward such acts of violence.
Details of the Attack
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that the attack was declared a terrorist act, given its targeted nature and the weapons used. One of the gunmen was fatally shot by police, while the second was apprehended and remains in critical condition. The incident left at least 29 others injured, including two police officers.
The attack was described by New South Wales Premier Chris Minns as a deliberate assault on Sydney’s Jewish community. He characterized the violence as an attempt to instill fear during a time of celebration. Eyewitness accounts and dramatic footage captured the chaos, with one courageous bystander tackling and disarming one of the assailants.
In the aftermath, police initiated an ongoing operation to secure the area and investigate suspicious items found nearby, including an improvised explosive device located in one of the suspect’s vehicles. Emergency services responded promptly to the scene, attending to the injured and transporting them to local hospitals.
Context of Gun Violence in Australia
Mass shootings are notably rare in Australia, a country that enacted stringent gun control measures following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, where a lone gunman killed 35 individuals. The incident led to significant reforms in firearm acquisition laws, making it more challenging for citizens to obtain weapons. Other notable incidents in recent years included murder-suicides in 2014 and 2018, as well as a shooting involving police officers in Queensland in 2022.
The Bondi Beach attack has reignited discussions on security measures at public events and the need for vigilance in protecting communities. As investigations continue, the Australian government faces renewed scrutiny over its counter-terrorism strategies and the safety of its citizens.
The international community has rallied in support of Australia during this difficult time, with leaders worldwide condemning the violence and expressing their condolences to the families affected by this tragedy.
