South Africa Triumphs Over India with Stunning Chase in Raipur
South Africa achieved a remarkable victory against India in the second One Day International (ODI) of their three-match series, held in Raipur on December 3, 2025. Chasing a formidable target of 359 runs, South Africa displayed exceptional batting prowess, ultimately reaching 362 runs for the loss of six wickets, securing the win in 49.5 overs.
India, having won the first ODI in Ranchi, set a challenging benchmark with a score of 358 runs for five wickets in their allotted 50 overs. The hosts showcased a strong batting lineup, with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Virat Kohli both scoring centuries. KL Rahul contributed significantly as well, finishing unbeaten on 50 runs.
In response, South Africa’s innings was spearheaded by a stellar performance from Aiden Markram, who played a pivotal role in the chase. Alongside key contributions from Matthew Breetzke and Dewald Brevis, Markram’s efforts ensured that South Africa maintained a steady run rate throughout their innings. South Africa’s successful chase against India adds to an impressive list of 350-plus run-chases in their ODI history. One of the most memorable came during the fifth ODI against Australia in 2006, where South Africa chased down a staggering total of 438 runs. Australia set the bar high with a score of 434 for four, with notable performances from Adam Gilchrist, Simon Katich, Ricky Ponting, and Michael Hussey. Despite losing Boeta Dippenaar early, Graeme Smith’s 90 and Herschelle Gibbs’ extraordinary innings of 175 kept South Africa in contention. Mark Boucher’s unbeaten 50 ensured a thrilling finish as they reached 438 for nine in just 49.5 overs.
Another significant chase occurred in 2016 at Kingsmead, Durban. In that match, Australia posted a substantial total of 371 runs for six wickets. David Warner’s 117, along with Steve Smith’s 108 and Aaron Finch’s quick-fire 55, set the stage for a competitive encounter. South Africa responded with determination, as Quinton de Kock scored 70 and David Miller delivered a standout performance, finishing with an unbeaten 118 from just 79 balls. They successfully chased down the target, scoring 372 runs for six wickets in 49.2 overs.
The recent match in Raipur underscores South Africa’s batting depth and their ability to chase down daunting targets in ODI cricket.
