Runners Embrace Beauty and Resilience at Kashmir Marathon 2.0

The second edition of the Kashmir Marathon took place on March 10, 2024, in Srinagar, attracting over 1,500 participants from 11 countries and 27 states. The marathon, starting from Polo View and winding around the scenic Dal Lake, was more than just a race; it represented a powerful symbol of beauty, resilience, and a collective hope for peace in the region.

As the sun rose above the Zabarwan mountains, the atmosphere was vibrant with runners of various skill levels filling the Boulevard Road. Local residents showed their support, waving flags and offering encouragement to the athletes. Children were seen handing out water bottles, embodying the spirit of community as the marathon route came alive with energy and enthusiasm.

Participants expressed profound sentiments about the experience. An athlete from Germany, who has competed in marathons across 18 countries, described the course as “like running through a postcard,” noting the unique combination of serene landscapes and enthusiastic crowds. “You don’t often see people cheering from their rooftops at 7 a.m.,” he remarked, highlighting the warmth of the local support.

For many, including first-time marathon runners, the decision to participate in the Kashmir Marathon was significant. A runner from Bengaluru shared that despite initial concerns from her family, she felt an overwhelming sense of peace and safety while running along Dal Lake. “It’s calm, it’s alive, it’s safe, and it feels like running in heaven,” she said, capturing the essence of the event.

The local community also felt a strong connection to the marathon. Abdul Rashid, a participant from Srinagar, emphasized the importance of such events for Kashmiri youth, stating, “When we run with athletes from other countries, we feel part of the world again. It’s not just about sports; it is about being seen.”

The Kashmir Marathon was organized by the Department of Tourism, Kashmir, in collaboration with the J&K Sports Council. The event featured both a 42-kilometre full marathon and a 21-kilometre half marathon, with a prize pool of ₹25 lakh (approximately $30,000).

The race was officially flagged off by the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, along with senior officials and notable Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty, who joined the local crowd in cheering for the runners.

As the last participants crossed the finish line under the crisp morning sun, the atmosphere was filled with applause and celebration. The event concluded with music and cheers, marking a successful gathering that celebrated not only athletic achievement but also the resilience and spirit of the Kashmiri people.

The Kashmir Marathon 2.0 has established itself as a significant event, showcasing the region’s beauty and the potential for unity through sports.
