Kris Srikkanth Opposes Sanju Samson Trade to CSK Ahead of IPL 2026

Former Indian cricket captain Kris Srikkanth has expressed strong opposition to the potential trade of wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in exchange for all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. As the IPL 2026 auction approaches, Srikkanth advocates for CSK to focus on developing young talent Urvil Patel instead, suggesting he could be a viable successor to the legendary MS Dhoni.

Reports from ESPN Cricinfo indicate that a trade between CSK and the Rajasthan Royals (RR) is nearly finalized, which would see Samson donning the yellow jersey while Jadeja and Sam Curran move to RR. This decision has sparked considerable discussion, particularly given Jadeja’s long-standing association with CSK since the 2012 season, aside from the years the franchise was banned in 2016 and 2017.

In the final stages of the disappointing 2025 season, Urvil Patel had the opportunity to showcase his skills, averaging 22.66 with a striking rate of 212.50 across three matches. Srikkanth emphasized the importance of nurturing such talent, stating on his YouTube channel that CSK should prioritize Patel’s development over bringing in a player like Samson.

Srikkanth also pointed out that Jadeja has not had ample opportunities to demonstrate his batting prowess in recent seasons. In contrast, he noted that Samson’s performance in the 2025 IPL season was underwhelming. The former captain highlighted that, much like Jadeja, Samson has spent a significant portion of his career—11 out of 13 years—with RR, serving as the team captain since 2021 and leading them to the IPL final in 2022.

By advocating for Urvil Patel’s growth, Srikkanth aims to bolster CSK’s future prospects while questioning the strategic value of trading away a seasoned player like Jadeja, who has been integral to the team’s success over the years. With the IPL auction just around the corner, the decisions made by CSK will have lasting implications for their roster and overall performance in the upcoming season.
