A successful emergency drill to assess preparedness for a potential radiation leak was conducted at the Kaiga Atomic Power Generation Station in Uttara Kannada District on December 11, 2023. The exercise aimed to ensure readiness among local communities that could be affected by such an incident.

Details of the Emergency Drill

According to a press release from K. Lakshmipriya, the Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada, the drill commenced following an emergency alert received at 6:30 a.m. from the site emergency director at Kaiga. The alert triggered the establishment of two radiation impact zones, designated as L zone and M zone. The L zone included the villages of Hartuga, Goole, and Nagekove, while the M zone encompassed Kuchegar, Shirve, Keravadi, and Devalamukki.

In response to the alert, an emergency meeting was convened at 6:45 a.m., led by the chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority and the Deputy Commissioner. Officials were instructed to implement immediate remedial measures, which included barricading the affected villages and issuing public alerts.

Public Safety Measures Implemented

To ensure public safety, schools and colleges in the vicinity were closed for the day. Transportation officials arranged buses to transport residents to designated rehabilitation centres. Medical teams conducted health check-ups for residents from the affected areas, while measures were taken to decontaminate citizens, animals, and vehicles leaving these villages.

As part of the decontamination process, water and materials used were safely disposed of, following strict safety protocols. By 2:10 p.m., the district administration announced that the situation at the Kaiga station was under control and released information to the public confirming that the potential threat had been effectively mitigated.

This drill highlights the commitment of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and local authorities to prioritize safety and preparedness in the event of nuclear incidents. The proactive measures taken reflect a comprehensive approach to emergency management in the region.
