India Targets Leadership in Quantum Tech Patents by 2035

India has set an ambitious goal to become one of the top three countries globally in filing patents for quantum technologies by 2035. This initiative stems from a comprehensive roadmap devised by the NITI Aayog, aimed at positioning India as a key player in the burgeoning quantum economy. Investment in Education and Skills Development

To strengthen its capabilities in quantum technology, India will implement professional development programs that fuse business acumen with technical expertise specific to quantum fields. This includes the establishment of dedicated interdisciplinary curricula in quantum engineering at both the undergraduate and doctoral levels. The government plans to support these educational initiatives with a robust vocational training ecosystem, emphasizing the development of hardware engineering skills and fostering technology leadership.

In addition, global training fellowships will be introduced to provide researchers and engineers with hands-on experience in leading laboratories around the world. The expectation is that these experiences will enhance their skills and directly contribute to the growth of India’s quantum ecosystem.

By 2040, the objective is to deploy a workforce of 1.2 lakh trained professionals across various domains, including quantum physics, materials science, optical engineering, and quantum information science. Business specialists skilled in sales, marketing, and development within the quantum sector will also be essential to this workforce.

The potential applications of quantum technology are vast and transformative. For instance, while traditional computers manage urban traffic systems, they often struggle during peak congestion. Quantum computers can analyze millions of traffic scenarios simultaneously, enhancing traffic management efficiency. Similarly, in drug discovery, which typically spans 10–15 years, quantum computers can accurately simulate molecular behavior, enabling scientists to identify promising compounds much earlier in the process.

Moreover, logistics and delivery companies can leverage quantum technology to determine optimal delivery routes instantaneously. This capability could lead to same-day deliveries, reduced fuel consumption, and cost savings, ultimately benefiting consumers with lower prices.

India’s commitment to becoming a leader in quantum technologies represents a significant shift towards innovation and economic growth, positioning the country at the forefront of a technological revolution.
