India International Science Festival Launches with Astronaut Insights
The India International Science Festival commenced on October 7, 2023, in Panchkula, attracting a diverse audience of students, youth, and science enthusiasts. This four-day event aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators, with the inaugural day featuring notable presentations, including one from Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla.
During his address, Shukla captivated the audience with stories from his nearly 20-day mission in space. He described the view of India from orbit as “breathtaking” and affirmed that the country is emerging as “the best in the world.” His mission involved conducting a range of scientific experiments that will contribute valuable insights for the Gaganyaan mission, India’s ambitious human spaceflight program.
Shukla highlighted the significance of his work, which included research on India-centric food, medicines, and innovative technologies. He emphasized the rapid advancements India is making in science and technology, urging the youth to pursue careers in these fields. “The responsibility of realizing the vision of a developed India by 2047 rests on the shoulders of the youth,” he stated, encouraging them to engage with science and space exploration.
In an interactive session, Shukla responded to various questions from attendees, fostering a dynamic dialogue. He reflected on the inspiration he received from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who announced in 2018 that an Indian would soon travel to space. This declaration spurred Shukla to pursue his dream, and he has since worked diligently towards that goal.
When questioned about the pathways to becoming an astronaut, Shukla revealed that a new framework is being developed to allow individuals from various fields—not just the Air Force—to enter the astronaut program. He cited Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, India’s first astronaut, as a significant source of motivation in his journey. Shukla expressed optimism that many more Indians will have the opportunity to venture into space in the coming years.
The event also celebrated India’s progress with the successful launch of the Aditya-L1 mission, dedicated to studying the Sun. This mission, alongside the Gaganyaan initiative, marks a pivotal moment for India as it strengthens its position in the global space community.
As the festival continues, participants are encouraged to explore the various exhibits and engage with leading figures in science and technology. The enthusiasm displayed by the youth and the emphasis on education reflect a broader commitment to nurturing future leaders in scientific innovation.
