IIT Bombay has launched its strategic plan for 2026–2030, aiming to elevate the Institute to a position among the world’s leading technology universities by the year 2030. The plan emphasizes excellence in education, pioneering research, innovation, and significant societal impact.

The strategy revolves around three core themes: Learning-Centric Education, Frontier Research Leadership, and Industry and Society Relevant Research & Translation. This information was detailed in an official statement released on October 24, 2023.

One of the significant changes includes a shift towards student-driven, experiential learning. IIT Bombay plans to enhance global academic pathways through joint degree programs, while also expanding its online education offerings. The Institute intends to provide an array of digital degrees and certificate courses to learners worldwide, broadening access to its educational resources.

In terms of research, IIT Bombay aims to bolster its leadership in priority fields, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Climate Technology, Healthcare and MedTech, Quantum Technologies, Semiconductors, Advanced Materials, and Space and Defence. To support these initiatives, the plan includes the establishment of new interdisciplinary centres and the targeted recruitment of top faculty members in high-impact areas.

The Institute is also set to deepen its engagement with industry stakeholders, support an increasing number of start-ups, and expedite the transformation of research into market-ready products and solutions that benefit society.

To facilitate these ambitious goals, the strategic plan identifies six key enablers: faculty development, world-class infrastructure, a net-zero campus, modernized management practices, financial sustainability, and strengthened partnerships with alumni and corporate entities. Additionally, enhanced wellness support for students, staff, and faculty is a focal point of the plan.

This comprehensive strategy was developed following extensive consultations with faculty members, students, alumni, industry leaders, and staff. It establishes a clear and ambitious direction for IIT Bombay’s growth and global influence over the next decade.

New Hostel Inaugurated for Student Accommodation

On the same day, IIT Bombay inaugurated Hostel 19, designed to accommodate over 1,000 students. The ceremony was led by Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, the newly appointed Chairperson of the Board of Governors, alongside Prof. Shireesh Kedare, the Director of the Institute, and senior officials.

The new hostel features a G+9 structure encompassing 300,000 square feet and is designed around a courtyard layout to enhance natural light, ventilation, and community interaction. With a capacity to house 1,051 students, the facilities are ergonomically designed to promote comfort and functionality.

Amenities at Hostel 19 include a dining hall that seats 650, a fully equipped kitchen, a 24/7 cafeteria, a gymnasium, indoor games rooms, and dedicated spaces for music, dance, yoga, and study. A recreational terrace located atop the dining block further enhances the living experience for students.

This new accommodation underscores IIT Bombay’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its students while supporting its broader strategic objectives. As the Institute embarks on this transformative journey, it aims to set new benchmarks in education and research on a global scale.
