Ram Temple Flag Hoisted as Tribute to Sacrifices in Ayodhya
The hoisting of a saffron flag atop the newly completed Ram Temple in Ayodhya on October 10, 2023, marked a significant moment for many who have long awaited its culmination. Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the ceremonial flag-raising, which Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), described as a day of peace for the souls of those who sacrificed their lives for the temple’s construction.
Speaking at the event, Bhagwat emphasized the symbolic importance of the flag, noting that its installation signified not only the physical completion of the temple but also the realization of many dreams held by those who fought for this cause. “Their souls must have found peace today,” Bhagwat remarked, recalling the contributions of several individuals throughout the lengthy process of construction.
Significance of the Ceremony
The construction of the Ram Temple has been a contentious issue in India, with roots extending back several centuries. Bhagwat highlighted the considerable time it took to reach this point, stating, “Even if we leave aside 500 years, it took 30 years.” The flag, referred to as the dharma dhwaj, represents the principles of dharma, which Bhagwat believes are essential for the well-being of all.
During his address, Bhagwat expressed that the saffron color of the flag symbolizes dharma and carries the emblem of the Raghu dynasty, specifically the kovidar (mandar) tree. He articulated a vision that these values would guide not only individuals but also families and society as a whole.
Bhagwat’s remarks resonated with those present, as the ceremony was attended by many supporters and devotees. The installation of the flag serves as a reminder of the long journey leading to this moment, reinforcing a sense of community and shared purpose among followers.
The completion of the temple and the accompanying flag-raising ceremony underline a significant chapter in the cultural and religious landscape of India. As the saffron flag flutters atop the Ram Temple, it symbolizes not just a physical structure but also the enduring spirit of those who fought for its establishment.
