Rajnath Singh Lauds Modi’s Efforts to Uphold Patel’s Anti-Corruption Legacy
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his commitment to reviving the anti-corruption legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel during celebrations marking the leader’s 150th birth anniversary. Speaking at an event held at Sardar Sabha, Singh emphasized that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is dedicated to implementing a framework that aligns with Patel’s vision for accountability in governance.
The Defence Minister highlighted the introduction of the “130th Constitutional Amendment,” which seeks to mandate the resignation of ministers jailed for more than 30 consecutive days. This proposal, according to Singh, is a significant step towards fulfilling Patel’s ideals regarding corruption and governmental integrity.
Addressing Corruption in Governance
During his address, Singh stated, “Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was very strict about corruption. He clearly stated that any complaint against any minister, regardless of position, must be investigated. If the allegations are found to be true, the minister should immediately resign from his post.” He noted that the BJP’s initiative marks the first time Patel’s wishes have been acknowledged in the history of independent India.
The proposed 130th Amendment Bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 20, 2025, aims to establish a legal framework for the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and other ministers if they are imprisoned for serious criminal charges that carry a potential sentence of five years or more. The bill has been sent to a Joint Committee of both Houses of Parliament for further deliberation.
Celebrating Patel’s Legacy
Singh also reflected on the importance of celebrating Patel’s legacy, noting that some political factions sought to diminish his historical significance. “PM Modi has played an important role in re-establishing him as a shining star in the pages of history,” Singh remarked.
As part of the commemorative activities, the ongoing Sardar @150 Padyatra has covered a total of 72 kilometres, promoting Patel’s message of national unity and civic responsibility. This march serves as a tribute to Patel’s ideals, encouraging communities across India to embrace values of discipline, unity, and dedicated service, while fostering participatory citizenship.
The initiatives surrounding Patel’s anniversary reflect a broader commitment by the BJP to reinforce accountability in governance and celebrate the principles that have shaped India’s political landscape. By introducing legislative measures inspired by Patel’s vision, the party aims to address concerns of corruption and ensure greater transparency in public office.
