Russian President Vladimir Putin visited New Delhi, where discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi focused on enhancing defence cooperation and technology transfer between the two nations. During a briefing on December 5, 2025, Vikram Misri, the Foreign Secretary of India, highlighted the ongoing strength of India-Russia ties, particularly in military and technical collaboration.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that the bilateral relations have remained robust, with a specific emphasis on joint production initiatives. Misri conveyed that Russia has been a steadfast partner in supporting India’s Make in India initiative. This commitment to collaboration was a central theme in the conversations between Modi and Putin.

“The Prime Minister appreciated President Putin’s support in expediting the opening of two new Indian consulates in Kazan and Yekaterinburg,” Misri stated. He added that these consulates are expected to enhance India’s regional outreach in Russia and foster deeper ties in trade, academic exchange, cultural collaboration, and people-to-people interactions.

The discussions also touched upon the need for reforms in international institutions. Misri emphasized the imperative to reform the United Nations Security Council to better reflect contemporary global realities. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to collaborate in various international forums where both India and Russia hold membership.

As the world navigates increasing geopolitical complexities, the strengthening of India-Russia relations through defence and technology is seen as a strategic move. The ongoing cooperation not only serves their national interests but also impacts the broader international landscape.

The partnership is poised to evolve further, with both nations recognizing the importance of mutual support and collaboration in various sectors, especially defence. This meeting marks another step in a long-standing relationship that has faced the test of time, adapting to new challenges and opportunities on the global stage.
