Delhi Eases Night Shift Rules for Women Workers to Boost Jobs
Delhi’s Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, announced significant changes to work timings for women in the capital, allowing them to take on night shifts. This decision, made public on October 15, 2023, aims to enhance employment opportunities and support women’s economic participation.
Under the revised framework, women will be permitted to work night shifts from 9 PM to 7 AM during the summer months and between 8 PM to 8 AM during winter. This initiative reflects a broader push to promote gender equality in the workplace while ensuring the safety of women workers.
In her statement, released by the Chief Minister’s Office, CM Gupta emphasized that the relaxation of work hours comes with essential safety provisions. Employers are now required to provide safe transportation and adequate facilities at workplaces, ensuring a secure environment for female employees.
Expanded Opportunities and Economic Growth
The new measures also extend to the operating hours of shops and establishments across Delhi. These businesses are now allowed to operate on a 24-hour basis, with the exception of liquor stores. The goal is to stimulate economic activity and create new job opportunities, particularly for women.
“Encouraging commercial growth will not only create new job opportunities but also increase women’s participation in the workforce,” CM Gupta stated. She noted that simplifying the registration and renewal processes for small traders further eliminates unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles, encouraging entrepreneurship.
The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to worker-friendly policies that foster industrial and commercial activity. By prioritizing women’s safety and expanding their roles in the workforce, the government aims to promote inclusive and balanced development in Delhi.
As these changes take effect, they are expected to have a profound impact on both the labor market and the economic landscape of the capital, paving the way for greater female empowerment and participation in various sectors. With these adjustments, Delhi is positioning itself as a progressive hub for workforce equality and economic growth.
