Maruti Suzuki Invests ₹35,000 Crore in New Gujarat Plant
Gujarat is set to bolster its status as a prominent automobile manufacturing hub with the announcement that Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) will invest ₹35,000 crore to establish a new car manufacturing plant in Khoraj, near Gandhinagar. This facility is projected to have an annual production capacity of 1 million vehicles and is expected to create direct employment for over 12,000 individuals, along with significant indirect job opportunities through ancillary and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the region.
The board of MSIL approved the investment earlier this week, with the formal handover ceremony taking place on Saturday in Gandhinagar. The event was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and MSIL Managing Director Hisashi Takeuchi.
Project Details and Expected Impact
According to state government officials, the Khoraj project will consist of four manufacturing units, each capable of producing 250,000 vehicles annually. The first phase of production is expected to commence in fiscal year 2029. The integrated auto cluster anticipated to develop around the new facility is projected to generate around 750,000 indirect jobs over time, enhancing the region’s economic landscape.
CM Patel highlighted that the project aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Make in India, Made for the World.” He noted that the initiative will further strengthen what he termed as India’s most competitive automobile manufacturing corridor. Patel emphasized the state’s policy-driven governance, robust infrastructure, and industry-friendly environment as key factors that will support Maruti Suzuki’s expansion.
Additionally, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi remarked on the longstanding partnership between Gujarat and Japan, stating that Japan has been a consistent development partner since the inception of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit. He assured that the state government would continue to provide proactive support for Maruti Suzuki’s growth plans.
Existing Facilities and Future Prospects
Maruti Suzuki currently operates a manufacturing facility in Hansalpur, Gujarat, which has a production capacity of 750,000 vehicles per year. This capacity is expected to expand to 1 million units by fiscal year 2026-27. The new plant in Khoraj is poised to complement this existing facility, further solidifying Gujarat’s role as a key player in the automotive sector.
The announcement of this substantial investment reflects the confidence of major automotive manufacturers in Gujarat’s potential as a manufacturing destination, promising not only economic growth but also significant advancements in employment opportunities for the local workforce. As Gujarat continues to attract major investments in the automobile sector, it reaffirms its commitment to becoming a global manufacturing hub.
