A mother’s love has sparked a transformative initiative for differently-abled children in Himachal Pradesh. After her son Ayaan was diagnosed with Opsoclonus Myoclonus Syndrome (OMS), a rare neurological disorder, Alka Sharma recognized the urgent need for physiotherapy services in rural areas. Determined to ensure that no other parent would face the same challenges she did, she established the Angel Disability & Orphanage Home.

Alka, a resident of Chattar in the Fatehpur subdivision, made a significant personal sacrifice to launch her mission. With support from her husband, Neeraj, she sold jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh to fund the registration of her non-governmental organization (NGO). In September 2018, she opened the doors of the orphanage with just 20 children in her care.

Tragedy struck in March 2022 when Alka lost Ayaan, yet her resolve to help others only intensified. With assistance from local philanthropists, she relocated the orphanage to Bhagwal in the Jawali constituency. To finance the new premises, Alka sold additional jewellery valued at Rs 10 lakh.

Since its inception, the Angel Disability & Orphanage Home has made remarkable strides. Over 30 children have regained significant mobility and independence through modern physiotherapy and acupressure techniques. In total, approximately 160 differently-abled children aged 1 to 24 have received treatment. Currently, 30 children are actively benefitting from the services provided at the facility.

The NGO not only offers rehabilitation but also ensures comprehensive care. It provides pick-and-drop services for children from nearby areas and hostel accommodation for five children. A local benefactor has also contributed an ambulance to support transportation needs. Additionally, the home shelters two orphaned children, offering them full support and care.

Speaking to The Tribune, Alka highlighted the profound motivation she derives from witnessing the recovery of the children. “Twenty-five children currently attend daycare therapy with transport facilities,” she noted. Some children travel from distant locations, including Chamba and Palampur, while others come from outside Himachal Pradesh to access the services.

A dedicated team of 12 professionals, including physiotherapists, a speech therapist, caregivers, and a yoga instructor, work at the orphanage. Alka emphasized the importance of holistic approaches, stating, “Along with physiotherapy and acupressure, yoga practices help strengthen the overall physical health of children.”

The implementation of modern therapeutic techniques has proven effective in enhancing physical function and managing chronic musculoskeletal conditions, offering hope and improved quality of life to many families in the region. Alka Sharma’s unwavering commitment stands as a beacon of hope for differently-abled children and their families, showcasing the profound impact of community support and individual determination.
