Vadodara Municipal Officials Stage Protest Over Outside Interference
Officials of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) initiated a two-day mass casual leave on October 5 and 6, 2023, in response to what they described as “interference and harassment by outsiders” in their official duties. Although the protest was significant, essential municipal services remained operational throughout the period.
The decision to take mass casual leave was communicated to the municipal commissioner via a memorandum on Thursday. While initially planned for Class I officials, the protest gained momentum, with officials from other classifications joining in on Friday. The memorandum highlighted various events organized as part of the Urban Development Year, aimed at increasing public engagement.
Officials expressed concerns that certain outsiders were unfairly portraying them by misrepresenting the details of their projects. They asserted that this ongoing controversy has led to a decline in morale among staff members and has tarnished the reputation of the civic body. The memorandum specifically called for action against these individuals, citing instances where the VMC’s audit department faced challenges in clearing bills due to false complaints of corruption generated by third parties.
Officials claimed that these outsiders were visiting project sites, obstructing work with ulterior motives. The memorandum pointed to a specific department that faced significant challenges related to the Urban Development Year celebrations, highlighting the detrimental impact of external interference.
On Friday, senior Class I officials continued their protest, and sources indicated that if the situation remained unresolved, they might extend their leave through Saturday. In an effort to mediate the situation, elected representatives convened a meeting with Deputy Municipal Commissioner Ganga Singh, urging him to persuade the protesting officials to return to work. Both the mayor and the standing committee chairman stated they were unaware of the mass casual leave until it was reported in the media.
The VMC’s actions have brought attention to the strained relationship between municipal officials and external influences, raising questions about the integrity and effectiveness of local governance. As the situation develops, the officials’ demand for accountability highlights the potential challenges facing civic bodies in maintaining operational integrity amidst outside pressures.
