Police Rescue Five Victims from Kidnap Gang in Pune

The Khed police in Pune have dismantled a gang involved in the abduction of individuals with learning difficulties, rescuing five victims who were forced to work on various farms. The operation resulted in the arrest of four gang members, including a woman, highlighting a disturbing trend of exploitation within vulnerable communities.

Details of the Abduction

On Wednesday, the police rescued the five individuals from a farm located in a village within Khed taluka. According to Sub-Inspector Shrikant Godage, authorities are still working to determine the identities of the victims. The case against the gang members has been formally registered under sections 140 (abduction) and 146 (unlawful compulsory labour) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, a legal framework addressing such crimes.

One of the rescued victims, a 43-year-old man with learning difficulties, had been missing from Chas Village since April 2023. He was discovered at a police station in Shirwal, located in Satara District, on August 20, 2023. His brother, upon seeing him, was alarmed by the visible burn marks on his body, a troubling indication of the abuse he endured.

Gang Operations and Arrests

Police investigations revealed that gang members often posed as relatives of the victims, deceiving farmers into providing food and shelter. They would then collect the wages earned by the victims, effectively profiting from their exploitation. The operation intensified when two gang members returned to Chas Village on August 23, 2023, in search of the previously rescued man, leading to their arrest.

Sub-Inspector Godage noted that the victim disclosed the name of the village where he had been held captive for over two years, prompting further investigations. Another man and a woman associated with the gang were apprehended on August 25, 2023, as authorities ramped up efforts to uncover the full extent of the gang’s operations.

The police are currently examining the possibility that more individuals with learning difficulties may have been abducted and forced into labor. This case raises significant concerns about the safety and rights of vulnerable populations, prompting calls for greater awareness and protective measures.

As investigations continue, the Khed police remain committed to uncovering any additional victims and ensuring that those responsible for these crimes are brought to justice.
