Ganesh Baraiya Overcomes Disability to Achieve Medical Dreams
Ganesh Baraiya, a resident of Gujarat, has defied the odds by becoming a medical officer despite facing significant challenges due to his disability. At just 3 feet tall and weighing less than 20 kilograms, Baraiya has a 72% locomotive disability caused by dwarfism. His journey to becoming a doctor began when he was denied admission to the MBBS program by the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 2018.
This rejection marked the beginning of a long and arduous battle for Baraiya, who was determined to pursue his dream of studying medicine. Instead of giving up, he chose to challenge the MCI’s decision. His legal struggles began when he approached the Gujarat High Court, which upheld the council’s ruling. Undeterred, he sought assistance from his school principal, Dr. Dalpatbhai Katariya, who supported him financially in his pursuit of justice.
His fight did not end there. Baraiya escalated the matter to the Supreme Court of India, all while enrolling in a BSc degree program to continue his education. After four months of legal proceedings, the Supreme Court delivered a landmark judgment in Baraiya’s favor. The court ruled that the MCI could not deny him admission based solely on his height, affirming his right to pursue his medical aspirations.
In a recent interview with ANI, Baraiya reflected on his journey, stating, “My primary education was from my village. I took the NEET UG exam in 2018, but at that time, the MCI rejected me due to my disability. I was very dejected. We lost the case in the Gujarat High Court, but we filed the case in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled that no one can stop you because of your disability, and a seat will be reserved for you in 2019.”
Baraiya’s determination and resilience have made him a source of inspiration for many individuals facing similar challenges. His story highlights the importance of fighting against systemic barriers that prevent people with disabilities from accessing education and employment opportunities.
Today, Dr. Ganesh Baraiya serves as a medical officer at a civil hospital in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. His success is a testament to his unwavering spirit and serves as a reminder that perseverance can lead to significant achievements, regardless of the obstacles one may face.
With his story gaining attention, Baraiya continues to motivate others to pursue their dreams, advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities in the process. His journey exemplifies the potential for change when determination meets resilience.
