Expert Tips to Maintain Healthy Hair During Winter Months
As winter sets in, many individuals experience common hair issues such as dryness, frizz, and breakage. With the cold air stripping moisture from hair and scalp, hair care becomes essential for maintaining healthy and vibrant locks. Dermatologist Dr Abhishek Pilani, a hair transplant and restoration specialist, emphasizes the significance of adapting your hair care routine to combat winter-related problems.
Dr Pilani, founder of Assure Clinic, notes, “Every winter, I notice a sharp rise in people coming in with dry, frizzy, and unmanageable hair, and most don’t realise the problem starts at the scalp.” He recommends a few key strategies to ensure your hair remains shiny, strong, and manageable throughout the season.
Moisturising and Hydration Techniques
Winter air is notoriously dry, leading to a rapid loss of moisture from both hair and scalp. To counter this, opt for a hydrating shampoo paired with a nourishing conditioner that contains natural oils such as argan oil, coconut oil, or shea butter. These ingredients not only restore moisture but also create a protective barrier against harsh weather conditions.
Additionally, incorporating a weekly deep-conditioning treatment can significantly improve hair texture. Dr Pilani advises, “Cold air pulls moisture from the scalp very quickly. Once the scalp is dehydrated, it immediately shows up as dullness, rough texture, and reduced hair strength.” To enhance hydration further, consider using a leave-in serum or a few drops of hair oil following your wash.
Washing and Styling Practices
Frequent hair washing can strip away essential natural oils, exacerbating dryness. During winter, limit washing to two or three times a week, and always use lukewarm water instead of hot, which can lead to further dehydration. When you do wash your hair, using a dry shampoo between washes can help absorb excess oil and add volume.
Avoiding heat styling tools is crucial during this season. Dr Pilani suggests air-drying your hair when possible and using a blow dryer on a cool setting if necessary. For those who want to style their hair, braiding damp hair before bed can result in soft waves without heat exposure.
Scalp and Hair Care Rituals
A warm oil massage is a must during winter months. Massaging the scalp with warm oils such as coconut, almond, or olive oil not only nourishes the scalp but also enhances blood circulation. Allowing the oil to sit for at least 30 minutes or overnight can provide deep nourishment and alleviate common winter issues like dryness and dandruff.
Protecting your hair from the cold is equally important. When outdoors, cover your hair with a soft scarf or hat, ensuring they are not too tight to avoid restricting circulation. Lining your headwear with silk or satin can reduce friction, helping to maintain moisture and prevent split ends.
Regular trims are also essential during winter. A trim every six to eight weeks can help prevent split ends and maintain healthy hair.
Nutrition and Hydration
Healthy hair begins with proper nutrition and hydration. During winter, people often neglect their water intake, yet hydration is vital for a healthy scalp. Aim to drink plenty of water and include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and protein, such as fish, nuts, seeds, eggs, and leafy greens, in your diet. These nutrients support hair growth and help keep your hair nourished.
Static and frizz can become frustrating issues in winter. To combat this, use a wide-toothed comb instead of a plastic brush and avoid over-drying your hair with towels. Lightly misting leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz spray can help control flyaways, while satin pillowcases can keep hair smooth during sleep.
With consistent care and mindful adjustments to your routine, winter can be an opportunity to provide your hair with the extra attention it deserves. By following these expert tips, maintaining shiny and healthy hair during the colder months is achievable.
