Tharoor Addresses Controversy Over Putin Dinner Invitation
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding his attendance at a presidential banquet for Russian President Vladimir Putin, which notably did not include senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. Tharoor expressed regret over the absence of these opposition leaders, stating that their presence would have been appropriate given the significance of the event.
In remarks delivered on October 12, 2023, Tharoor clarified that he attended the banquet in his official capacity as the chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee. He emphasized that turning down an invitation from the President would have been improper. During the event, both President Droupadi Murmu and President Putin made warm comments that contributed to the evening’s atmosphere.
The exclusion of Gandhi and Kharge has sparked a debate within the Congress Party. Some leaders have raised questions about the invitation process, suggesting that it should be more inclusive of key opposition figures. In contrast, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defended Tharoor’s invitation, asserting that it was based on his parliamentary role and responsibilities.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions within Indian politics, particularly regarding representation at high-profile international events. Tharoor’s comments reflect a recognition of the complexities involved in diplomatic engagements, where the dynamics of party politics intersect with national representation.
As discussions continue, the Congress Party may need to review its approach to such invitations to ensure a unified front in international representation.
