A significant Russian drone and missile strike targeted a railway hub near Kyiv, specifically the town of Fastiv, causing damage to a depot and several railway carriages. According to Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, there were no casualties reported from the overnight attack. This incident is part of a broader escalation, as Russia has intensified its assaults on Ukraine’s energy facilities and infrastructure in recent weeks.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attack, stating on social media platform X that, “Russia continues to disregard any peace efforts and instead strikes critical civilian infrastructure, including our energy system and railways.” He emphasized that decisive actions to support Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia must not be postponed, especially under the guise of a peace process.

Ukrzaliznytsia also reported that the strike resulted in the cancellation of several suburban trains near Kyiv and in the northeastern city of Chernihiv. Emergency services confirmed fires and destruction at the railway station and depot, with additional damage in the Chernihiv region.

The Ukrainian military announced that Russia launched a total of 653 drones and 51 missiles overnight, with Ukrainian forces successfully intercepting 585 drones and 30 missiles. Furthermore, power and heating facilities in regions including Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, and Dnipropetrovsk were hit. Reports indicated that approximately 9,500 customers were left without heating and 34,000 lacked water supply in the Odesa region.

The Ukrainian Ministry for the Development of Communities and Territories highlighted that port facilities in Odesa were also affected. Part of the infrastructure was de-energized, prompting operators to switch to backup power from generators. The energy ministry reported that strikes impacted energy infrastructure across eight regions, resulting in widespread blackouts.

“Emergency repair work is already underway where safety conditions permit,” the ministry stated via Telegram. “Energy companies are doing everything possible to restore power to all customers as quickly as possible.”

In a related development, air raid sirens were activated early on Saturday in Lubartow, located in Poland’s eastern Lublin region. Local mayor Krzysztof Pasnik noted that the alert was issued in response to the situation in Ukraine. Poland scrambled jets overnight as a precaution, although the Operational Command of the Armed Forces confirmed that there had been no violations of Polish airspace.

As the conflict continues to escalate, the implications for both regional security and civilian safety remain a pressing concern.
