The Kashmir Valley is currently experiencing a severe cold wave, with temperatures dropping significantly across the region. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the coldest recorded temperature was in Shopian, where the mercury fell to a chilling -5.0°C. Other areas in the valley have also reported frigid conditions, affecting both residents and visitors alike.

In Srinagar, the minimum temperature reached -2.5°C, while nearby Qazigund recorded -2.4°C. Popular tourist destinations continue to experience the cold as well, with Pahalgam at -2.2°C and Gulmarg at a slightly warmer 0.0°C. Several other key locations reported significant low temperatures: Kupwara at -3.1°C, Kokernag at -0.6°C, and Baramulla at -4.3°C.

The situation is equally severe in the Jammu region, where temperatures, although higher than in Kashmir, remain below normal. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 8.6°C, while Katra settled at 8.5°C. The coldest area in Jammu was Banihal, where temperatures dipped to -0.5°C.

Cold Snap Extends to Ladakh Region

The cold wave extends to the cold desert of Ladakh, where temperatures are even lower. Leh recorded -6.6°C, and Kargil experienced -4.8°C. The Nubra Valley also reported a temperature of -5.0°C, indicating a widespread freeze across the region.

Weather forecasts predict dry conditions for the next seven days, but there is a possibility of cloud cover and light snowfall in higher altitudes on December 3 and 4. This weather pattern may provide some relief from the biting cold, although it could also lead to hazardous conditions in the mountainous areas.

The ongoing cold wave has significant implications for daily life and tourism in the region. Residents face challenges related to heating and transportation, while tourists may reconsider their travel plans due to the extreme weather. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as conditions evolve.

As Kashmir grapples with these frigid temperatures, the focus remains on ensuring safety and preparedness for those affected by the cold.
